Medical Definition of WERNICKE'S ENCEPHALOPATHY
: an inflammatory hemorrhagic encephalopathy that is caused by thiamine deficiency, affects especially chronic alcoholics, and is characterized by nystagmus, diplopia, ataxia, and degenerative mental disorders (as Korsakoff's psychosis)
